3rd and 4th of February, 2022.

The church is closed. On my way there, I pass by a building with images of the pope and some saints. It is a building full of apartments, so I believe it is for the church. I rang the bell and a lady comes to talk to me. She speaks a poor English but understands me. She say they have small apartments there, so there is really no space inside even to put my camping mattress. But she calls another lady to talk about it, and even mentioned about a friend of hers, who live nearby, who perhaps could help. She invites me to wait inside and even brings me a chair. After a few minutes, they call someone and I should wait for a few minutes to talk with this person.
In five minutes, the devil comes by. A elderly man walks towards me and simply says that there is no place for me to stay, it is not a shelter, so I have to leave. And he points me in the direction of the door. What a rude jerk! I get so upset with his rudeness, out of nowhere, that I start to cry a little bit. But when I am grabbing my backpacks, I tell him that I only came asking for a bit of help, for shelter, and there was no reason for him to treat me like that, while the other ladies were so nice. Do you know what he says? That the ladies were terrifying of me. That another time, another “tramp” (his used this word) came in asking for help and they could not get rid of him later, so they were scared of me because of that. What a load of crap! Big liar!
Out of nowhere, he opens his wallet and try to give me 20 Euros. Laugh. Why disgusting people think that they fix everything with money? Why do they think that everybody is after money? I tell him that I am a graduated teacher, I have a diploma and even so I chose to live without money, that I didn’t come there asking for money, only for a bit help. Then I live.
Walking down the road, I cry for real. What is wrong with society? What is wrong with human beings? Everything?
I see a tower which also looks like a church. The lights are one. I stop in front and start to think if it worth to try again. At that same time, a couple come out of the building, and by the look in their eyes, I decide to talk to them.
After I explain everything, they seem very surprise about what have happened but they also look very kind and understanding people.
Suddenly, the devil shows up again. This time in a brand new, black and shiny BMW. He is looking for me, she says. As soon as he gets out of the car and talk to me, I start to cry again. The lady look at me with such pity but kind eyes, extremely surprise with my reaction. The devil, says he decided to hep me so he will look into a hotel for me, and start to look in his mobile phone. I say it is not necessary, that I don’t need his help. All it happens in less than one minute. The couple (the angels) tells the devil I am staying with them. The devil then try to give them some money, to which the male angel immediately refuses and say it is not necessary. The devil has way too many issues with money.
My guard angels take me to their home, where I meet their two children, a boy and a girl. They are all so lovely. We have a lovely dinner in their house (lovely house, by the way) and we talk also for a while. I spend the night in their garage.
Next morning, we have a lovely breakfast, with fresh bread and pastries that melt in the mouth. We take a photograph, I prepare some sandwiches, they insist that I take also the last lovely pastry and an apple. It is with sadness that I say goodbye to my dear girl angel.
The other angel and his son walk with me to the museum. A nice elderly lady is expecting me and she allows my friends to also join me for free. Edams Museum is so cute and charming. It is the oldest building in town and is to show how people use to live back in the times. The most scary part for me it was at their old storage room: a underground, better saying, underwater room, which moves all the time with the swing of the sea. But the museum it is also full of beautiful pieces, art, collections which tell the history of Edam. I totally recommend you to visit it.
We proceed to the Town Hall, where there is the exhibition of Edams pottery. A generous donation, from someone who in the past acquired most of the pottery produced on the glory times Edams local industries. There is a cute video which you can watch during your visit. But there are only two rooms to see, so the visit can be very short.
I say goodbye to my other angel and his son, so they can return home and I will explore Edam town a little bit. There is really not much to see apart of the cute houses and the canals. I grab my backpack from the Tourist Info and walk towards my hitchhiking spot.

P.S.1: to this day, I am still expecting that my angels will contact me through my blog, so I can write down their names properly (on my blog and on my heart). Or perhaps… they were real angels and I just imagined everything…?

P.S.2: They were real! As you can see in the comments and here are their names: Robert, Liesbeth, Maren and Zeger.

  1. Hi Leila, what a surprise to read about our encounter last February. We have been wondering how you were! It’s good to hear that you are well (apart from your migraine and other incidents along the way). We remember you very well! We have talked many times about you and how nice it was to talk to you (books and writers, remember?) You have written very kindly about us, we enjoyed your company too, although it was brief. It was so poetic of you, the way you wrote about devils and angels and the mystery of life. For us, it felt the same on this dreary evening when we suddenly met this sweet and interesting stranger from Brazil. To answer your question: your guardian angels are Robert, Liesbeth, Maren and Zeger. We hope to see you again. When you are in the neighborhood, don’t hesitate to contact us. Love from all of us

    1. My dear Angels,
Thank you so much for your comment and your lovely words! It makes me truly happy to know that you had also enjoyed out time together as much as I did. And that you liked the way I wrote about it. I have finished “The Picture of Dorian Gray”!
I hope to see you again too!
      Lots of love, Lei.
